The Terenga Lions of Senegal emerged as the winner of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in a thrilling penalty shootout in the final against Egypt in Yaounde, Cameroon.
The game ended goalless throughout the regulation time and added 30 minutes extra period to move into a penalty shootout.
Sadio Mane was denied a 12 yard kick by Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal in the early hours of the game but redeemed himself to score the winning penalty.
Egypt made the final after knocking out the hosts on Thursday, following on from Senegal’s 3-1 win over Burkina Faso the day before.
Senegal wins the title for first time in their history haven previously lost two Nations Cup finals, finishing runners-up in 2002 and 2019
Egypt still remains the most successful team in the Africa Cup of Nations, lifting the title seven times.
The two sides will meet again in March in a two-legged play-off for a spot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
