The Gombe State Athletics Association  are threatening to boycott the proposed Athletics competition planned to commence today, Tuesday,  October 22, 2024.

The event, scheduled to commence today, at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe, falls short of international athletics standards.

According to Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe, Chairman of the Gombe State Athletics Association, the organizers of the event are unknown and lack experience in sports management.

The GAA has warned its athletes and Nigeria Athletics Association of Technical Officials (NAATO) members to steer clear of the event.

The GAA’s decision is based on several key factors. The competition fails to meet athletics standards in terms of running facilities and medical and insurance requirements.

Additionally, the leaders of the Gombe State Athletics Association are unfamiliar with the event organizers, who have not demonstrated expertise in sports management.

Furthermore, NAATO officials were not formally invited to participate in the competition.

The GAA leadership emphasized that participating in the event would ridicule athletes and athletics, and has directed its officials not to participate.

Athletes who register for the event risk facing severe sanctions and penalties.

This decision aligns with the rules of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and World Athletics, which dictate that all stakeholders must adhere to standardized rules and regulations.

In a press statement, the GAA urged its members to synchronize with the State Athletics Association to promote growth and talent discovery in athletics.

By taking a stand against substandard events, the Gombe State Athletics Association demonstrates its commitment to upholding the integrity and standards of athletics in Nigeria.

The GAA’s boycott serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining high standards in sports organization and management.

It also highlights the need for transparency and accountability in event planning to ensure the well-being and safety of athletes.
