The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, in accordance with it’s statutory responsibilities of coordinating emergency/disaster response with a mandate to Respond, Rescue, Recover, Rehabilitate and ensure continuous Disaster Risk Reduction in the State, responded to a total of 1,675 incidents between 1st January-31st December, 2024.
Out of the annual total of 1,675 attended by the Agency in 2024, 167 incidents were attended to in the month of December, 2024, which effectively brought the total figures from 1st June 2019 to 31st December, 2024 to 8,117 incidents attended by the Agency during the Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu led administration.
Out of the 167 incidents attended in December 2024, Road Accident category ranks first with 58 vehicular crashes, Truck/Tanker Category ranks second with 43 incidents, comprising of 29 truck/tanker accidents, 11 Break Downs, 2 fallen Truck/Tankers and 1 stuck Tanker incident, and Fire Disaster ranks third with 33 incidents comprising of 31 Fire Outbreaks, 1 burnt Tanker/Truck and 1 burnt Car/BRT bus.
17 Other Events comprising of 15 assorted incidents, 1 Well incident and 1 Assault, ranks fourth, while the Medical Category ranks fifth with 13 assorted incidents, with 1 Building Collapse, 1 explosion, and 1 Gas Leakage jointly ranks sixth in position. However, the Agency did not record any cases under the Marine, Train nor Air Crash category in the month of December, 2024.
Data Analysis of incidents attended per Local Government in the month under review reveals that Et-Osa Local Government ranks highest with 23 cases attended out of the 167 incidents recorded, followed by Ikeja Local government with 22 recorded incidents, while the densely populated Alimosho Local Government Area, with the largest landmass, ranks third with 21 recorded cases out of the 167 incidents attended in December, 2024.
On it’s part Kosofe Local Government Area ranks fourth with 15 incidents recorded, Mushin and Lagos Mainland LGAs ranks fifth, each with 12 incidents recorded, followed by Lagos Island LGA ranking at seventh with 11 incidents recorded, Oshodi-Isolo ranks eighth with 10 incidents recorded, Shomolu ranks ninth with 8 incidents recorded, Apapa ranks tenth with 7 incidents, and Surulere LGA ranks eleventh with 6 incidents recorded.
Further, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area ranks twelfth with 5 incidents, Amuwo-Odofin ranks thirteenth with 3 incidents recorded, while Agege, Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu, Epe, Ojo Local Government Areas and Outside Lagos ranks in fourteenth place with 2 incidents each, while Badagry and Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGAs did not record any emergency/Disaster incidents in December, Y2024.
Data generated by Operational Bases/Units and Pre-Hospital Care Unit spread through the 3 Senatorial Districts of Lagos for better coverage and swifter Response Time reveals that out of the 167 incidents attended in December, 2024, Pre-Hospital Care, ranked highest with 59 cases attended, it also topped with 596 medical cases attended out of the 1,675 in Y2024 Annual Data.
Close examination of available data from 1st January to December 31st Y2024 reveals that Lagos State experienced a total of 1,675 incidents, with the Truck/Tanker/Trailer category which comprises of 345 Accidents, 129 Broken Down Trucks and 19 Fallen Trucks/Tankers, 10 Fallen Containers and 4 Stuck Trucks being responsible for 507 incidents.
Data equally revealed that the Road Accidents/Crashes Category comprising of 438 Vehicle Accidents, 18 Broken Down Vehicles, and 2 others placed second with 458 incidents, while Fire Disaster Category comprising of 266 Fire Outbreaks, 7 Tanker/Truck Fires, and 12 Vehicular (Car/BRT) fires placed third with 285 incidents during the year.
During the period under review (Y2024) the Air/Train Crash recorded the least incident in the year with 3 Train Crashes, followed by Marine Category which recorded 6 incidents comprising of 3 Floodings and 3 Boat Mishaps, as well as 6 Spillages/Leakages Comprising of 3 Gas, 1 Diesel, 1 Pipeline and 1 Gas Tanker spills, and 9 Explosions comprising of 8 Gas and 1 Pipeline Explosion.
Data on Emergency Trends in Local Governments for last year reveals that Alimosho Local Government recorded the most number of cases with 262 incidents, while Ikeja LGA placed a distant second with 185 incidents and Eti-Osa LGA placed third with 168 cases, while Badagry Local Government Area recorded the lowest with 4 cases, followed by Ajeromi-Ifelodun with 17 cases and Ifako-Ijaiye LGA with 20 cases.
On it’s part, the Monthly Emergency Trends revealed that the most cases in a month was recorded in December, 2024 with 167 cases, followed by February in second place with 156 cases and March in third place with 148 cases, while the lowest number of incidents was recorded in August, Y2024, with 121 cases, followed by July with 123 cases then June and September placing third with 126 cases each.
In the last six years (1st June, 2019-31st December, 2024), the Agency has attended to 8117 incidents in Lagos State where the highest number of incidents was recorded in Y2021 with 1,743 cases, followed by 1,682 recorded cases in Y2022 placing second in a downward trend, while Data recorded that the Agency attended to 1,675 cases in Y2024.
