Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has announced a ban on public gatherings and convoy movements ahead of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s planned homecoming, citing security concerns.

The directive was issued on Monday in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo.

According to the statement, intelligence reports indicated that some individuals were planning to organize violent rallies under the guise of political or religious activities, potentially leading to unrest.

To prevent disruptions, the government has imposed restrictions, including a total ban on rallies and public gatherings, regulation of security convoys entering the state, and the suspension of fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area following recent violence that claimed two lives. Security forces have also been deployed to maintain law and order.

The government urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies, assuring them that these measures were temporary and necessary to ensure public safety. Citizens were encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

The ban has sparked criticism, with some viewing it as an attempt to suppress political opposition. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters have accused the governor of trying to prevent celebrations marking her return, vowing to find alternative ways to express their support. The move also comes amid allegations that Governor Ododo is shielding his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, from prosecution over alleged financial misconduct, further fueling tensions in the state.
