What many do not know about late Diamond Bank founder, Pascal Dozie

Pascal Dozie, the founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank Plc and former chairman of MTN Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 85. His death was confirmed by the Dozie family in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Speaking on behalf of the family, his son, Uzoma Dozie, shared that the prominent business tycoon died in the early hours of Monday, April 8, 2025.

“With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, on 8th April 2025,” Uzoma said.

“He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith. His life was marked by service – to God, his family, and his country,” he added.

He is survived by his loving wife, Chinyere, his children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family expressed their gratitude for the gift of his life and the legacy he leaves behind, and they prayed for his soul to rest in perfect peace.

Here are 10 Important Things to Know About Pascal Dozie:

Birth and Early Life
Pascal Dozie was born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, in Imo State, southeastern Nigeria.

Primary and Secondary Education
He began his education at Our Lady’s School in Emekuku, Imo State, before moving on to other educational institutions.

University Education
Dozie pursued further studies abroad, attending the London School of Economics. He earned a degree in Economics and later obtained a master’s degree in Administrative Science.

Return to Nigeria and Career Start
After completing his education, Dozie returned to Nigeria, where he began his career in the private sector, quickly gaining recognition for his expertise in finance and economics.

Founder of Diamond Bank
In 1990, Dozie founded Diamond Bank Plc, a financial institution that grew to become one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks. The bank later merged with Access Bank in 2019. Dozie eventually passed the leadership of the bank to his son, Uzoma Dozie.

Chairman of MTN Nigeria
In addition to his banking career, Dozie served as the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, where he played a key role in guiding the telecommunications company during its early years in Nigeria.

Awards
For his outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s banking and economic development, Dozie was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), one of Nigeria’s highest national honors.

Role in the Private Sector and Advocacy
Dozie was actively involved in advocating for private sector development and entrepreneurship in Nigeria. He mentored many young business leaders and championed sound financial practices across industries.
