It was an inspiring display of purpose and unity on Saturday as hundreds of energetic young men and women converged in Abuja for the “Progress in Pink Walk,” a spirited awareness march organized by the APC Youth Wing to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The 4-kilometre walk, themed “Walk for Hope, Walk for Life,” kicked off at The Nest Resource Centre, with participants advocating for early detection, timely medical intervention, and hope for individuals and families affected by breast cancer.

October is globally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A time to promote awareness, prevention, and support for those affected. The APC Youth Wing’s initiative aligns with this cause, reaffirming its commitment to public health and youth-led advocacy.

Leading the initiative was the APC National Youth Leader, Dr. Dayo Israel, whose visionary leadership continues to drive youth empowerment and health advocacy across the nation. He emphasized the importance of self-awareness and early action in combating breast cancer.

“We joined the fight against childhood and adolescent cancer, commending President Tinubu’s administration as the first in Nigeria’s history to invest this greatly in cancer eradication, with the 2025 budget marking the highest allocation ever for diagnosis and treatment. Also, we want women to know their bodies and act quickly if they notice anything unusual. Awareness and early detection save lives,” he stated.

Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, commended the APC Youth Wing for championing public health awareness, noting that eight out of ten breast cancer cases in Nigeria are detected late. He urged Nigerians to prioritize regular check-ups, healthy lifestyles, and preventive care.

Also speaking, the President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, highlighted that breast cancer accounts for up to 40–50% of all cancer cases in Nigeria. He called for a community-based approach to cancer awareness and applauded the APC Youth Wing for mobilizing young people to lead positive change.

The “Progress in Pink Walk” concluded with a free screening and participants reaffirming their commitment to promoting early detection, regular screening, and healthy living, underscoring that through awareness, unity, and collective action, Nigerians can defeat breast cancer.
