ThemomentNG reports that the governor made the announcement on Saturday, October 25, 2025, during the official opening of the maiden Kano Festival of Arts and Culture (KanFest), known in Hausa as Kalankuwa, held at the Kano Trade Fair Complex.

Governor Yusuf described the directive as part of his administration’s broader commitment to reviving and safeguarding Kano’s cultural heritage and reaffirming the role of traditional institutions in promoting unity and peace.

“The craftsmanship of our people, the richness of our traditions, and the resilience of our forefathers are what made Kano the pride of the Sudan region and a reference point on Africa’s cultural map,” the governor said.

He explained that the UNESCO recognition of the Kano Durbar Festival as one of the world’s intangible cultural heritages had prompted his government to issue the executive order to the four emirates, Kano, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, directing them to continue the annual celebration.

“This recognition places Kano on the global stage and reaffirms the importance of our traditional institutions in promoting peace, unity, and cultural identity,” Yusuf added.

“The state government and all 44 local governments will continue to support the emirates to sustain this proud tradition.”

ThemomentNG reports that at the event, which marked the inaugural edition of KanFest, Yusuf described the festival as “a milestone in the history of our beloved state.”

He said Kano’s identity as a centre of learning, commerce, creativity, and civilisation makes it imperative to celebrate and preserve its rich heritage.

“Even before our election, our administration had pledged in its blueprint to revive and reposition the state’s cultural and tourism sector as part of efforts to restore the dignity of our people, strengthen identity, and create new economic opportunities,” he said.

The governor listed several ongoing projects aimed at preserving and modernising the state’s historical landmarks. These include:

  • Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism complex
  • Upgrading of the History and Culture Bureau into a world-class research and documentation centre
  • Restoration of Gidan Dan Hausa, Gidan Rumfa, and the ancient Kofar Mata dye pits, one of the world’s oldest surviving traditional dyeing centres
  • Reconstruction of the collapsed Gidan Makama monument
  • Modernisation of the Magwan leather hub to empower local artisans and enhance the competitiveness of Kano’s leather industry

“We have also commenced the restoration of the ancient city walls and gates of Kano, a 700-year-old symbol of unity, strength, and civilisation. Our goal is to preserve it as an enduring heritage and a source of pride for future generations,” Yusuf said.

‘Culture Is a Living Asset For The Future’

Governor Yusuf noted that beyond preserving history, his administration sees culture and tourism as key drivers of economic diversification and job creation.

“Culture is not a relic of the past; it is a living asset for future generations,” Yusuf declared.

“We will continue to promote arts, culture, and tradition as vital instruments of social cohesion, youth engagement, and economic growth.”

He said the cultural revival initiative is part of a broader plan to empower creative industries, attract tourism, and boost local enterprise.
