The Comptroller-General (C-G) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, has emerged as the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF).

Adeniyi emerged as president at the end of an election held on October 25 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, which was supervised by the National Sports Commission.

This is contained in a statement issued by the NCS spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, on Sunday in Abuja.

Maiwada said that the position was a demonstration of the C-G’s unwavering commitment to national development.

“The milestone further cements his record of service and leadership excellence,” he said.

Maiwada added that the election drew commendation from athletes and sports administrators nationwide, who described the outcome as timely and strategic for Nigerian sports.

He also said that the Customs boss had made significant contributions to different sports activities before venturing into wrestling administration.

“Under his leadership, the Customs Sports Unit has become one of Nigeria’s most formidable institutions in sports development, producing champions, olympians, and role models across various disciplines,” he said.

Meanwhile, in his remarks shortly after the election, the NWF president commended the ongoing reforms within the nation’s sports sector and expressed optimism about their impact.

He emphasised the importance of good structure, transparency, and effective leadership in driving sustainable progress for athletes and federations alike.

“I am beginning to see the dividends of the reforms that President Bola Tinubu is putting into the sports sector, putting the right people in place, the right processes and the right systems to drive the electoral process.

“I am quite satisfied and I feel this is an environment where I can work and thrive,” he stated.

Adeniyi assured that he would align the Federation’s vision with national sports reforms and work with his board members to prioritise structure, integrity, athlete development, and innovation in the sport’s management.
