A Federal High Court in Ibadan, on Monday, sentenced middle-aged Chinedu Aguzia to 11 years in the correctional centre for peddling 80.8kg of Cannabis Sativa, otherwise called marijuana.
Delivering judgment in the case, Justice Nkonye Maha said that she convicted and sentenced Aguzia based on the evidence tendered by the prosecution against him as well as his guilty plea.
Maha also said that the court took cognisance of the fact that the convict was a first time offender and had not wasted the time and resources of the court before pleading guilty.
“Aguzia is hereby sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for the offence.
“Sentence starts from the date of his arrest.
“The weed exhibit found in his possession shall be destroyed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The Prosecution Counsel, Mrs O.O Olorunsola, had told the court that the convict committed the crime on Oct. 2, at Ojoo area of Akinyele Local Government Area, Ibadan.
Olorunsola further said that the NDLEA operatives received intelligence reports that Aguzia was into the business of illicit drug trafficking.
According to him, the operatives swung into action and apprehended him in possession of 80.8kg of the illicit substance.
She also said that the offence contravened section 11(C) of the NDLEA Act and law of the Federation 2004.
