Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has confirmed that there was indeed a plot to impeach the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
He, however, said the move was swiftly foiled by loyal senators who resisted the attempt and stood for unity.
Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District and former governor of Abia State described the failed impeachment bid as a mere “family misunderstanding” that had since been resolved.
“There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen,” Kalu stated. “We are one big family, and it’s not going to happen.”
Insiders say the brief power play within the Senate was triggered by internal disagreements over leadership style and committee appointments but quickly collapsed after senior lawmakers, including Kalu, intervened to rally support for Akpabio.
Kalu’s confirmation has put an end to weeks of speculation over mutterings within the upper chamber that had fueled rumours of growing divisions among principal officers.
On the state of the economy, the senator acknowledged that Nigerians were facing difficult times but expressed optimism that the reforms of the Tinubu administration would soon yield results.
“As a businessman, I feel the pains too,” Kalu said.
He stated that “the macro economy is improving, foreign investors are coming in — what is left is for the progress to trickle down so people can eat and return to farming.”
He stressed that both the President and the National Assembly were working together to stabilise the economy and ensure food security across the country.
