The Yobe State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all boarding secondary schools across the state, citing heightened security concerns and the need to proactively safeguard students.

ThemomentNG reports that the directive was announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director General of Press and Media Affairs to Governor Mai Mala Buni, Mamman Mohammed.

“Yobe State Government has directed the closure of all boarding secondary schools in the state as a proactive measure to safeguard students in the schools,” the statement said.

Mohammed explained that the decision followed a high-level security meeting between Governor Buni and security chiefs in the state, during which they reviewed recent attacks on educational institutions across Nigeria.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Bukar Bukar, was quoted as directing the immediate closure of all secondary schools pending an improvement in the security situation.

Governor Buni urged residents to pray for the nation’s leaders, security operatives, and lasting peace, stressing that the safety of children remains a top priority.

ThemomentNG reports that Yobe has become the latest state to shut schools amid rising insecurity, particularly the mass abduction of students in Northern Nigeria.

In recent days, Kebbi, Plateau, and Kwara States have ordered the closure of several schools following coordinated attacks by armed bandits.

The Federal Government also directed the shutdown of 14 Federal Unity Colleges pending a security review.

The decisions follow a string of large-scale kidnappings.

Recall that on Monday, 17th November, 24 students were abducted in Kebbi State. Later in the week, gunmen kidnapped about 315 students from Niger State.

In Kwara State, attackers stormed a church, reportedly killed two people and abducted scores more.

These incidents have intensified calls for urgent government action and stronger protection for schools, especially in rural and border communities.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an escalation of security deployments across the country and promised the safe rescue of all abducted victims.

The President also directed security agencies to tighten preventive operations, particularly around schools and worship centres, following the recent coordinated attacks.
