The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has shut down an unhygienic depot and sealed a water-based drinks factory in Kaduna.

Speaking to newsmen on Saturday in Kaduna, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr Nasiru Mato, said in line with the agency’s mandate of safeguarding the health of consumers in the state, they intensified surveillance on the manufacture, distribution and sale of regulated products to guarantee their quality, safety and efficacy.

Mato said that following a credible intelligence, a team of regulatory officers from NAFDAC Kaduna State office, led by him, swung into action and uncovered a facility used as a depot operating under unhygienic and poor sanitary conditions for storage of yoghurt and flavoured drinks prior to further distribution.

He emphasised that such action was unsatisfactory and unacceptable as it violated standard regulations, adding that under such storage conditions, product contamination is imminent.

He, therefore, said, consequently, the facility was shut down as first line of sanctions.

In a similar development, Mato said another surveillance visit to a sachet water and water-based drinks manufacturer also uncovered that both the systems and processes met on ground could not guarantee quality, safety and wholesomeness of the products.

He said both the Good Manufacturing Practices and Good Hygiene Practices were compromised, thus, the facility was also placed on hold as first line of sanctions.

He emphasised that manufacturers of all class of regulated products should always adhere strictly to Standard Operating Procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices, warning that any violation would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
