The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has summoned chairpersons and key leaders from its university chapters nationwide to Abuja for a crucial National Executive Council meeting.

ThemomentNG gathered through reliable sources that the session will hold today, Sunday, at the Festus Iyayi Building, located inside the University of Abuja.

Some NEC members and zonal leaders of the union had already landed in Abuja ahead of the meeting, sources said.

A senior member of the union’s NEC, who spoke to Sunday Punch on condition of anonymity due to lack of media clearance, confirmed the summit on Saturday in Abuja.

The NEC member explained that leaders would be briefed on the status of ongoing engagements between the government and ASUU leadership.

He added that the key aim is to bring branch leaders up to speed on negotiations, funding discussions, and welfare concerns affecting public universities.

The NEC insider also revealed that a decision on whether the union would proceed with a strike would be reached at the meeting table.

The NEC member said, “The leadership across various universities will meet and we will make the final decision. We need to review the terms and conditions set forth by the Federal Government. Our members already have their stance, so when we get briefed, we will be able to make a decision.

“We have given the government enough opportunity to clarify, or let me say rectify, their previous positions. ASUU’s position has not changed, and that is the implementation of the Nimi Briggs Committee report.”
