A personal assistant to a former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), Adeyeye Ajayi, has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the elder statesman is dead, describing them as false and misleading.

Ajayi, in a statement issued on Sunday, urged Nigerians to disregard the rumours, insisting that Gowon is very much alive and in good health.

The aide described the reports as unverified and capable of causing unnecessary panic among members of the public.

“The claims making the rounds on social media about the death of General Yakubu Gowon are completely false and misleading,” Ajayi stated.

He stressed that there was no truth whatsoever in the reports, adding that the former military leader continues to live an active and purposeful life.

According to Ajayi, Gowon remains engaged in public life and continues to contribute meaningfully to national discourse.

He said, “General Gowon is alive, in good health, and remains active. He continues to attend public events and contribute to discussions on peace, unity and the development of Nigeria.”

Ajayi cautioned against the spread of unverified information, noting that such rumours could cause distress to family members, associates and the general public.

He appealed to Nigerians to always verify information from credible and authoritative sources before sharing it, especially on social media platforms.

The aide urged citizens to act responsibly in the consumption and dissemination of news to curb the growing menace of fake news in the country.
