The Convener of The Alternative Movement, Segun Showunmi, at the weekend, hinted at contesting the governorship seat in Ogun State come 2027, declaring that he remained the only person who is best prepared to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Showunmi dropped this hint at the weekend while addressing members of the Ogun State Executive Council of the Labour Party who paid a courtesy call on him at his Ibara GRA home in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Members of the executive council of Labour Party in Ogun State during the visit had requested Showunmi to contest the governorship in 2027 on the platform of the party.
The National Vice President, Southwest of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, during the visit urged Showunmi to seriously consider flying the party’s governorship flag in the next general elections in the country.
Arabambi expressed optimism that having Showunmi as the governorship candidate of the LP in Ogun would make the party more formidable, acceptable and put it in a good stead in 2027.
Responding to the request, Showunmi thanked the party executives for believing in his capacity to govern Ogun, assuring that he would give the party’s request meticulous consideration.
He said though he is still a bonafide chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, he would make necessary consultations and revert to the LP executive members on their request.
Showunmi who disclosed that he has done a critical analysis of politicians aspiring to become Ogun governor in 2027, boasted that none of them can match his political network, experience, consistency and credibility, insisting that he’s the only best prepared person to succeed the incumbent governor.
He added that since he joined politics, he never had the cause to defect from the PDP, pointing out that the offer tabled before him by the LP was too attractive to be discarded.
Showunmi, however, said that he would consult with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Governors Olusegun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, on the request of the Labour Party and inform the party of his final decision in a short time.
He described the LP as a strong and unique platform capable of winning several elective positions both at the state and the federal levels, submitting that the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, had raised the rating and acceptance of LP in Nigeria.
He said the sterling performance of Obi during the presidential poll in 2023 showed clearly that with credible candidates, the Labour Party would cause an upset in the 2027 election.
