Chelsea have begun the process of appointing a new head coach following the departure of Enzo Maresca, with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior emerging as the leading contender for the role.

Maresca, 45, left his position on Thursday after just one season in charge amid reported internal tensions with Chelsea’s hierarchy and ownership.

The Italian, who previously guided Leicester City to promotion, departs as the club once again looks to reset its long-term project.

As reported by BBC Sport on Friday, Rosenior, 41, is understood to be the frontrunner to succeed Maresca, although sources stress that other candidates remain under consideration.

“The Englishman currently manages Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, who are owned by BlueCo the same investment consortium that purchased Chelsea in 2022, a link that is believed to strengthen his candidacy,” BBC Sport said.

The former Hull City boss is thought to have significant internal backing at Stamford Bridge.

With speculation growing over his potential move to west London, Strasbourg are already understood to be considering possible replacements should Rosenior depart.

Porto head coach Francesco Farioli has also been mentioned as a possible option as Chelsea assesses the market.

The club’s owners are expected to continue their data-led and progressive approach to recruitment, prioritising a coach who fits their long-term vision.

Chelsea explored several high-profile candidates before appointing Maresca in 2024, including Marseille’s Roberto De Zerbi, Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna and Thomas Frank, who has since left Brentford to take charge at Tottenham. Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham boss Marco Silva have also been linked with the role in the past, though it remains unclear whether either is part of the current shortlist.
