The brief statement indicated that Adams had been granted permission to visit his mother, who was hospitalised.

It read: “Akor Adams has been granted permission to leave camp to go be with his mum, who was hospitalised yesterday.

“We’re sending prayers and strength to him and wishing his mum a quick recovery.”

Despite receiving the news before Nigeria took on the Mambas, Akor went ahead to start the game and scored the last goal.

It remains to be seen if the Sevilla striker will return in time for their quarter-final clash against either DR Congo or Algeria on Saturday.
