The Association of Resident Doctors at FMC Umuahia has announced plans to join the nationwide indefinite strike declared by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) from Jan. 12.

Its President, Dr Godwin Alaede, told journalists on Friday that members had been fully mobilised to comply with the national body’s directive.

Alaede said the decision followed an extraordinary general meeting held on Thursday to review NARD’s position and the memorandum of understanding with the Federal Government.

He said NARD opted for the strike due to the government’s persistent failure to address doctors’ legitimate demands despite repeated engagements.

“Despite extensive negotiations and signed agreements, our concerns remain unresolved, leaving us with no option but to withdraw our services.

“This decision was not taken lightly, and we regret any inconvenience to the public.

“However, we must confront the prolonged neglect of doctors’ welfare and the future of medical practice, including personnel and infrastructure challenges,” Alaede said.

He said key demands included the immediate reinstatement of five doctors at Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja, in line with recommendations of a duly constituted committee.

Other demands include prompt transmission of compiled promotional arrears to the Budget Office and Ministry of Finance for immediate processing and payment.

They also seek full implementation of the approved professional allowance table and payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to resident doctors.

“We remain open to dialogue and will reconsider our stance if the government shows genuine commitment to resolving these issues,” Alaede said.

He thanked the FMC Medical Director, Prof Azubuike Onyebuchi, and sister associations for their support.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that resident doctors in 91 tertiary health institutions were directed to withdraw services completely and indefinitely.
