As part of the Akwa Ibom State Government’s ongoing drive to develop tourism, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Emem Bob on Thursday led a senior government delegation on an inspection tour of the Blue River ecosystem in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

The visit sought to identify viable opportunities that align with the administration’s wider tourism and economic diversification objectives under the leadership of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD.

The delegation included the Chairman of the State Hotels and Tourism Board, Mrs Ime Udo, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Humanitarian Affairs, Prince Nsikanabasi Umoekpo, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical Matters, Engineer Charles Okorie, as well as engineers from the Ministry of Special Duties and Ibom Deep Port. They were received at the Council Secretariat by the Executive Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area, Prince Uyo Ukpanah, alongside the Vice Chairman and the Council Secretary.

From the Secretariat, the team proceeded to the river site to evaluate its current state, access routes and overall tourism prospects, with particular reference to the ARISE Agenda of the state government.
Addressing community members who turned out in large numbers, the Commissioner explained that the inspection was undertaken at the directive of the Governor, whose administration views tourism as a strategic driver of economic growth. He noted that the task before the team was to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the entire Blue River ecosystem and develop a detailed investment proposal to support informed policy and business decisions.
The visit reflects the administration’s determination to move from policy statements to concrete action, with a focus on unlocking the full tourism value chain across the state, especially within rural communities. Tourism continues to be recognised as a catalyst for development, with the capacity to generate employment, stimulate local economies and strengthen internally generated revenue.
When effectively developed, the Blue River ecosystem is widely regarded as having the potential to transform Ukanafun and neighbouring communities. The state government has reiterated its commitment to converting Akwa Ibom’s natural and cultural assets into sustainable economic opportunities that deliver tangible benefits to its people.
