Sokoto South Senator and former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has said elections in Nigeria are not entirely decided by the electorate.

Tambuwal made the assertion on Monday while speaking on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television.

According to him, irregularities often occur at various stages of the electoral process, leading to outcomes that do not accurately reflect the votes cast by citizens.

“It’s not completely decided by the electorates. I can say that and without mincing words,” Tambuwal said.

He explained that vote manipulation can happen at multiple points, including polling units, ward, local government, state and national collation levels.

“We know quite often times that at collation level or be it at the polling unit, at the ward level, at local government level, at the state level or even at the national level, things happen that misrepresent what voters actually vote,” he stated.

The senator also alleged that politicians exploit weaknesses in the system, while some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are compromised.

“The system is breaking away through the INEC, the court and the politicians because the politicians try to find corners to cut. So wherever there’s a loophole, politicians take advantage of that loophole,” Tambuwal added.
