Ronald Koeman has strengthened his Dutch national team staff ahead of the 2026 World Cup by bringing Ruud Van Nistelrooy on board as the third assistant coach, joining Erwin Koeman and Wim Jonk.

Van Nistelrooy, 49, enjoyed a glittering playing career with 70 caps and 35 goals for the Netherlands. He has previously served as an assistant coach for the national side, first in 2014–2015 and later during the rescheduled European Championship in 2021 under Frank de Boer.

Since then, Van Nistelrooy has held several managerial roles, including head coach at PSV, assistant and briefly interim manager at Manchester United, and head coach at Leicester City. His stint at Leicester ended in relegation in June 2025, leaving him without a club until now.

Speaking at his unveiling, Van Nistelrooy said, “Returning to this role with the Dutch national team and representing the Netherlands with this staff and talented group of players is a huge honour and a wonderful challenge for me. With my experience in various roles, including that of assistant, I know that this position also suits me well.”

Koeman expressed confidence in the former striker’s appointment. He said, “Ruud has shown that he can really add something to our staff with his own style and vision of football. He knows the laws of football at the highest level and brings valuable tournament experience, both as a player and a coach.”

Van Nistelrooy will officially join the national team immediately and is expected to be on the bench for the next international fixtures in March.
