The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dr. Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed his respect for the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, stating that there is no basis for political rivalry between them and emphasizing the need for cooperation in the delivery of development projects.

Dr. Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, made the remarks while responding to challenges encountered during the execution of the Ohumola Project, a federal government intervention attracted to the Igbere community in Bende Local Government Area.

According to the Deputy Speaker, governance at all levels should be guided by partnership rather than competition, stressing that projects meant to improve the welfare of citizens should not be obstructed due to political or administrative considerations.

“I give my governor due respect. I cannot compete with him. Development should not be a contest,” Kalu said, while questioning why federal projects intended for public benefit would face resistance at the local level.

He recalled that under the previous Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration in Abia State, he was able to execute constituency projects across schools and communities without hindrance, regardless of political differences.

“The PDP government never stopped me from building in any school. We should not be struggling to make interventions for our people. I go to Abuja to attract projects, and then they are stopped,” he stated.

Dr. Kalu underscored the importance of synergy between federal and state officials in achieving sustainable development, noting that public office is temporary and that collective effort is essential for lasting progress.

“Nobody stays in office forever. If I am building a road, you can go to another road and build. The people benefit when we work together,” he added.

While maintaining his respect for Governor Otti, the Deputy Speaker suggested that some of the difficulties may stem from individuals around the governor who, he said, could be acting out of personal ambition rather than official policy.

Dr. Kalu concluded by reiterating his commitment to delivering quality representation and democratic dividends to the people of Bende Federal Constituency, while upholding mutual respect and collaboration with the Abia State Government.
