The Federal Government on Saturday announced that First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, will deliver the keynote address at the Nigeria Teachers’ Summit 2026, scheduled to hold from January 27 to 28, as part of efforts to reposition teachers at the centre of education reform.

The Federal Ministry of Education said the summit, themed “Empowering Teachers, Strengthening the System: A National Agenda for Education Transformation and Sustainability,” will bring together teachers, policymakers, education administrators, legislators, development partners, civil society organisations, private sector representatives, parents and the media to discuss teacher welfare, professionalism and learning outcomes.

“The Federal Ministry of Education has announced the commencement of the Nigeria Teachers’ Summit 2026, scheduled to hold from 27th to 28th January 2026, as part of sustained national efforts to reposition teachers at the heart of education reform and national development,” the ministry said in a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.

According to the statement, the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, is expected to deliver the keynote address, while the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, are to make special remarks.

The ministry noted that the summit will include the recognition of teachers across the six geopolitical zones, as well as the announcement of an overall best-performing teacher.

“This initiative underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring dignity to the teaching profession, rewarding excellence, and motivating teachers as critical drivers of national development,” the statement read.

The event will also feature the launch of the Edurevamp Online Teacher Professional Development Portal, which the ministry said is designed to support continuous professional learning and skills development for teachers.

Other activities outlined for the summit include plenary sessions, panel discussions and expert presentations on teacher welfare, professional development, curriculum relevance, teaching methods and the use of technology in education.

The summit is expected to end with the presentation and adoption of a communiqué.

The ministry added that “no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers,” and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the education system.

Nigeria’s education sector has continued to grapple with longstanding challenges, particularly around teacher welfare, access to regular professional development, classroom capacity and infrastructure.

These issues have raised concerns among stakeholders about the quality of teaching and learning in many public schools. At the same time, industrial actions by education unions in recent years have further highlighted the pressures facing educators nationwide.
