‎A socio-cultural group, Ukhomuyio Concerned Citizens, has faulted what it described as attempts to use “social media propaganda” to legitimise an allegedly flawed traditional process in Okpella, Edo State, insisting that actions taken against established customs cannot be corrected through public relations efforts.

‎In a statement, the group said recent political developments involving individuals accused of undermining Okpella’s traditional institutions reflect what it described as ancestral disapproval of actions taken against long-standing customs.

‎The group expressed sympathy with families affected by insecurity in Okpella, recently disengaged workers of BUA Cement, displaced indigenous contractors, and kindreds whose lands and properties were allegedly forcefully acquired and sold. It also lamented the situation of local youths and residents who, according to the statement, are witnessing what it termed the transformation of Okpella’s traditional system into a “rotational monarchy.”

‎Ukhomuyio Concerned Citizens assured affected individuals and groups of its continued support, stating that efforts are ongoing to restore and protect Okpella’s cultural heritage.

‎“We want to assure all victims of these developments that they are not alone. The struggle to preserve our tradition is ongoing, and in no distant time, Okpella shall rejoice again,” the group stated.

‎The organisation specifically commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for what it described as a constructive engagement with Mike Sado, expressing optimism over future interactions. It also acknowledged the solidarity shown by prominent sons and daughters of Okpella, as well as the resilience of elders and youths who, it said, have endured intimidation and persecution in defence of tradition.

‎In the same statement, the group praised Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for what it described as visionary and pragmatic governance under the SHINE agenda. It highlighted initiatives such as the Edo Air project, efforts to curb kidnapping, infrastructure development, emphasis on education and employment, and the regular payment of salaries.

‎Ukhomuyio Concerned Citizens concluded by offering prayers for continued wisdom and guidance for the governor, expressing confidence that his administration would further advance development and stability in Edo State.
