Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to deeper defence cooperation aimed at addressing contemporary security challenges confronting Nigeria and the wider region.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Olufemi Oluyede, stated this on Friday while receiving the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, at Defence Headquarters.

This is contained in a statement issued by Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, on Friday in Abuja.

Oluyede commended the UK for its enduring partnership with the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), particularly in Professional Military Education, specialised training and operational capacity development, describing the collaboration as vital to strengthening national and regional security.

He reaffirmed the AFN’s commitment to continuous professional development and called for expanded, mutually beneficial defence ties, expressing optimism that enhanced cooperation—especially in emerging security domains and intelligence support—would further boost operational effectiveness.

In his remarks, Montgomery congratulated Oluyede on his distinguished service and lauded the steady progress in Nigeria–UK defence relations.

He reiterated the UK’s commitment to strengthening defence ties, stressing the shared responsibility of both countries in promoting regional stability, countering emerging threats and building sustainable military capacity.

The meeting underscored both nations’ resolve to deepen operational and strategic collaboration in response to dynamic regional and global security challenges.
