The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara Command, says it has apprehended 12 suspected illegal immigrants from Mali at the Akerebiata area of Ilorin.

This is contained in a statement by the state Commandant, Mr Bawa Bodinga and signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer,  Mr Ayoola Shola, on Thursday in Ilorin.

Bodinga said that the suspects, aged between 20 and 43, were apprehended on February 22 at about 10 p.m., after a tip-off from some concerned members of the public.

He said that the suspects were occupying a two-bedroom apartment, rented in Akerebiata, through a local agent, under suspicious circumstances.

He said that the items recovered during the operation include nine mobile phones, two international passports, identification cards, a wristwatch, different keys, and some cash.

Bodinga said that the command has commenced an in-depth investigation to ascertain why the suspects were in the state.

“The outcome of the investigation will determine whether there are any criminal links or intentions to perpetrate unlawful activities.

“Upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspects will be handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and necessary action in accordance with existing immigration laws,” he said.

The commandant noted that the arrest was made in the midst of security concerns within the state.

He said that the command would not allow unscrupulous elements turn Kwara into a criminal den.

“We remain fully committed to safeguarding lives, protecting properties, and curbing all forms of criminalities across the state,” he said.

Bodinga, therefore, urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with law enforcement  officers to ensure safety and security of lives of the citizenry. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
