Bayern Munich defeated Atalanta FC 6–1 in their UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday.
The German side dominated from kickoff, scoring three goals inside 25 minutes to overwhelm the hosts and effectively decide the contest before halftime.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany urged caution in spite the emphatic victory ahead of the return leg in Munich next week.
“There is still the second leg to play, so we must stay focused,” Kompany told reporters after the match.
He said the players delivered an outstanding performance, playing with pride and using their strengths effectively to create numerous chances.
Josip Stanisic opened the scoring in the 12th minute, tapping into an empty net after receiving a precise pass from Serge Gnabry.
Michael Olise doubled Bayern’s lead 10 minutes later with a powerful curling shot into the far corner.
Olise then provided an assist for Gnabry, whose low strike extended Bayern’s advantage to three goals before halftime.
Bayern continued their dominance after the break as Nicolas Jackson scored the fourth goal seven minutes into the second half.
Olise netted his second goal in the 64th minute before Jamal Musiala completed the rout with a close-range volley three minutes later.
Atalanta were without key players Ederson, Charles De Ketelaere and Giacomo Raspadori during the encounter.
The Italian side struggled to contain a Bayern team that finished second in the league phase to qualify directly for the last 16.
Mario Pasalic scored a late consolation goal for Atalanta deep into stoppage time.
However, the goal did little to lift the hosts’ morale ahead of the return leg at the Allianz Arena.
Atalanta coach Raffaele Palladino praised Bayern’s performance but thanked the home supporters for their encouragement throughout the match.
He described Bayern as a strong opponent and admitted the match proved a difficult challenge for his team.
Atalanta captain Marten de Roon said the team would approach the second leg with determination despite the heavy defeat.
He added that conceding six goals was unacceptable and stressed the need to disrupt Bayern’s rhythm in the return match.
