The National Executive Council of the Labour Party has dissolved the caretaker committee led by Esther Nenadi Usman following an internal review of the party’s affairs.

themomentng reports that the decision was taken during a virtual NEC meeting held on March 17, 2026, where members assessed the activities of the committee and its impact on the party.

The resolutions were confirmed in a statement signed by Abdulrahim Imam Chindo, who serves as secretary of the NEC forum.

The council, made up of elected state chairmen and their secretaries, said the committee’s actions had harmed the party since it began operating.

At the same meeting, the council restated its support for the National Working Committee led by Julius Abure, confirming him as the recognized national chairman.

The leadership under Abure was earlier produced at the party’s national convention in March 2024 and later affirmed by another NEC meeting in November 2025 under the watch of the electoral body.

The council also directed Abure to begin the process that would lead to the party’s primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He was asked to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission in line with the official timetable once legal issues affecting the party are resolved.

In addition, the NEC instructed Abure and the party’s national secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, to continue with an appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The appeal is aimed at overturning a judgment delivered earlier in January 2026 by a Federal High Court.

The council further declared that all earlier notices sent to the electoral commission by the Nenadi-led caretaker committee are no longer valid.

The meeting was convened after earlier calls for both virtual and physical sessions to address the crisis within the party.
