Two men, Michael Oludayo and Rauf Adebayo, on Wednesday appeared before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, for allegedly impersonating white ladies on Gmail.
The defendants, Oludayo, 20, and Adebayo, 20, whose addresses were not provided, were charged with conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, impersonation and obstruction of police officers.
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp Adeshina Folaranmi, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on March 17, at about 9:00 a.m., at the Gbagi area of Ibadan.
Folaranmi alleged that the defendants, with intent to defraud, falsely represented themselves on Gmail as white ladies residing in the United States.
He said that the defendants obstructed police operatives while the operatives were attempting to arrest them over the alleged offences.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 197, 249(d) and 484 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The Magistrate, Mrs Oluwabusayo Osho, granted the defendants bail in N500,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.
Osho held that one of the sureties must be a close blood relative to each defendant, while the other must be a religious leader in a reputable organisation.
She adjourned the case until June 17 for hearing.
