Real Madrid on Tuesday defeated Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals, extending City’s Champions League exit streak to three seasons.

Captain Bernardo Silva was sent off in the first half for deliberate handball, a decision that proved pivotal in the encounter.

Vinícius Júnior converted the resulting penalty  in the 22nd minute and added a late second goal in the 90th minute to seal victory for the Spanish giants.

Erling Haaland scored a consolation goal for City in the 41st minute, but it was insufficient to spark a comeback.

City faced an uphill task after a 3-0 first-leg deficit and saw hopes fade further following Silva’s dismissal after a VAR review by referee Clément Turpin.

Despite creating chances, City were denied repeatedly by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who produced key saves to maintain Madrid’s advantage.

Haaland’s strike before half-time briefly raised hopes, but City failed to mount a second-half revival as Madrid maintained control.

Manager Pep Guardiola now faces mounting pressure as City’s European campaign ends and their trophy ambitions narrow.

City remain in contention domestically but trail Arsenal FC in the league and face them in the Carabao Cup Final.

They will also take on Liverpool FC in the FA Cup quarter-finals as they seek to salvage their season.

Real Madrid, record 15-time winners, once again demonstrated their dominance in Europe with a composed and clinical performance.

They are likely to face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, as the German side hold a commanding advantage in their tie.
