Frances Mogagi emerged as the winner of the Amazons Tennis Tournament 2.0 on Saturday, defeating Funke Ayenugba in a closely contested final.
themomentng reports that Mogagi defeated Ayenugba, a Police Inspector, 4-1, 4-3(3) in a thrilling match held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
The tournament, now in its second edition, was organised to mark International Women’s Month.
The convener of the competition, Obayemi Joy, said in an interview that the tournament was designed to promote women’s participation in sports while fostering unity, passion and empowerment.
She noted that this year’s edition, with the theme “GIVE TO GAIN,” aligned with the spirit of International Women’s Month, adding greater significance to the event.
Speaking on the sidelines of the competition, Mogagi praised the organisers for creating a platform that unites women in sports.
“I did not take the competition seriously at first, as I approached it recreationally.
“However, as the matches progressed, I began to appreciate the level of competition, which made me more focused.
“Playing in the final was tough, and I must commend Ayenugba for pushing me to raise my game.
“I have been playing tennis consistently for about six years,” she said.
Ayenugba attributed her loss to fatigue, explaining that she had played several long matches earlier in the day.
“I was a bit tired, having spent a long time on court during the quarterfinals and semifinals.
“I must also commend Mogagi; she was a tough opponent, and I expected a difficult match,” she said.
NAN reports that the winner of the Amazons Tennis Tournament 2.0 went home with a N300,000 cash prize and a trophy, while the second-place finisher received N200,000, and the third-place finisher took home N100,000.
The winners of the Junior Amazon category, Olayinka Ayinla and Adesewa Olaniyan, received N100,000 each in scholarship awards.
NAN also reports that about 120 players participated in the tournament, representing more than 25 recreational tennis clubs in Lagos.
