The University of Calabar has spotlighted the doctoral thesis of the Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, as one of its most outstanding research works, reinforcing the institution’s growing emphasis on impactful scholarship.
The recognition came during an academic exhibition held on April 7, where the university’s Postgraduate College presented select high-quality research outputs from its various faculties and colleges. Kalu’s thesis stood out among the entries, earning commendation for its scholarly depth and contribution to knowledge.
The exhibition formed part of activities leading to the university’s convocation ceremony on April 11, during which Kalu was formally conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law.
In his remarks at the convocation, where he delivered a vote of thanks on behalf of the graduating class, Kalu described the doctoral journey as rigorous and transformative, emphasizing that research must extend beyond academia to influence policy and societal progress.
Quoting Aristotle, Nelson Mandela, and Albert Einstein, he stressed the importance of using education as a tool for meaningful change. He noted that doctoral scholars occupy a critical position in bridging the gap between knowledge and real-world impact.
“Policy grounded in research is deliberate, sustainable, and just,” he said, urging fellow graduands to ensure their work contributes to national development.
Kalu also highlighted the limited number of doctoral holders in Nigeria relative to its population, describing it as a call to responsibility for scholars to lead in innovation, thought, and governance.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, in his address, said the institution conferred PhD degrees on 463 graduands, describing the milestone as a testament to resilience, discipline, and intellectual commitment. He reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to reposition the university as a centre of excellence through reforms in academic integrity, infrastructure development, and research advancement.
He disclosed that the university has taken steps to sanitize its admission processes, enforce transparency, and uphold merit, while also investing in infrastructure such as upgraded lecture theatres, laboratories, and student accommodation.
The Vice Chancellor further highlighted the establishment of an Innovation and Entrepreneurial Hub aimed at bridging the gap between academic research and industry, noting that the initiative aligns with global trends in knowledge-driven economies.
The recognition of Kalu’s thesis at the academic exhibition, he said, reflects the university’s commitment to rewarding excellence and promoting research that addresses real-world challenges.
The convocation ceremony drew dignitaries from across government, academia, and the private sector, marking another milestone in the university’s efforts to strengthen its reputation as a hub for quality research and intellectual development.
