The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission has announced plans to conduct the next local government elections across the state.
themomentng reports that the commission fixed Saturday, January 16, 2027, for the polls, which will take place in all polling units across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State.
Voting is expected to begin at 8:00 a.m. and end by 3:00 p.m. on the election day.
The decision was reached at the end of the commission’s first meeting with its management team, held at the OYSIEC headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan.
The meeting was led by the chairman of the commission, Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, and focused on planning and sharing ideas on how to successfully carry out the council elections.
OYSIEC explained that political campaigns will officially end by midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027.
It also stated that if there is any need for a supplementary or re-run election, it will be conducted on Saturday, January 23, 2027.
The commission further noted that the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors in the 33 local government councils will come to an end on May 23, 2027, in line with the existing local government law of the state.
OYSIEC said the announcement followed the powers granted to it under relevant sections of the Electoral Act and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission Law, which allow the commission to give notice of elections well ahead of time.
The commission called on political parties, candidates, security agencies, and other stakeholders to work with it to ensure the successful conduct of the local government elections scheduled for January 2027.
