The extended family of late Esther Thomas, popularly known as Sunshine, has dismissed reports and a circulating video claiming that she had no family, describing the allegations as false, misleading and defamatory.
In an official statement signed by Bishop A. Joseph on behalf of the family, it was clarified that although Esther Thomas was an orphan, having lost both parents, she was not without family. The family said she had a known, traceable and living extended family whose members are present, identifiable and recognised.
The family also stated that Esther’s close associate, Lucy, was aware of her extended family and had been in contact with them in the past. According to the statement, a photograph currently in circulation clearly shows members of Esther’s extended family.
Addressing events that occurred in 2022, the family explained that when Esther faced serious personal challenges, they were informed and responded immediately. Her uncle reportedly travelled from Akwa Ibom State to Lagos to assist her. During that period, Lucy returned to Akwa Ibom State, leaving Esther in Lagos, while the family took responsibility for her situation until it was resolved.
The family further denied claims that they were informed about Esther’s illness or any surgery. They stated that they were not told that she was ill, nor that she had undergone or was scheduled for any surgical procedure. According to them, they were only notified after her death.
While mourning the loss, the family said any suggestion that they abandoned Esther or failed in their responsibility towards her is untrue and deeply hurtful.
The statement also addressed comments allegedly made by Chidera Madu, which the family described as insulting and damaging to their reputation. The family demanded a public apology within 48 hours for what they termed defamatory statements and for spreading false narratives about Esther’s life and death. They warned that failure to do so may lead to legal action.
On burial arrangements, the family stressed that only they have the legal authority to announce burial dates and make funeral plans for the late Esther Thomas. They cautioned friends, associates and third parties against making such decisions without the family’s consent.
The family concluded by reaffirming that Esther Thomas had a living extended family, that she was not abandoned, and that all funeral arrangements must come solely from the family. They prayed for her soul to rest in peace and asked God to grant them strength during the period of mourning.
