German tactician, Thomas Tuchel has signed a new contract to remain England manager until the end of Euro 2028.
Thomas Tuchel took charge in January 2025 on an initial deal that was due to expire after this summer’s World Cup.
The extension secures his long term future with the Three Lions and removes uncertainty at a crucial point in the international calendar.
Tuchel said it was “no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far” and confirmed he was “very happy and proud” to continue in the role.
With the 2028 European Championship set to be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, Tuchel is believed to see the chance to guide England into a home Euros as a rare opportunity.
The Football Association was also eager to lock in continuity ahead of the World Cup and avoid speculation about leadership changes.
Tuchel had previously been linked with Manchester United, where Michael Carrick remains in charge on an interim basis until the end of the season.
It was not the first time Tuchel had been considered for the Old Trafford job. He is understood to have met Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in France in 2024 during a period when the club was reviewing Erik ten Hag’s future.
Despite those links, Tuchel made it clear late last year that the England role had “re-energised” him and suggested he would be open to staying beyond his original 18 month agreement, which he had initially pushed for in order to assess how he felt in the position.
Announcing his new deal, Tuchel said he had received so much backing from the FA and supporters “that I did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job”.
“Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage,” he added.
His coaching team, including Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne, have also signed contracts running through to the summer of 2028.
On the pitch, Tuchel has made a strong start to life in charge, guiding England to eight wins from eight matches in World Cup qualifying. England will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in their group at the tournament finals.
Confirmation of his contract extension came on the same day the former Chelsea manager attended Thursday’s draw for the 2026 to 2027 Nations League.
