Nigerians are anxiously awaiting a crucial ruling from FIFA on Monday, February 16, as Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup hang in the balance.
The decision concerns Nigeria’s eligibility protest against the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) following their African play-off final clash last November.
Millions of Nigerians remain hopeful that the Super Eagles could still secure a playoff berth, depending on FIFA’s verdict.
The petition was filed in December by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which alleges that at least six DR Congo players who featured in the play-off final were ineligible due to recent nationality switches.
NFF General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi expressed confidence in the case, stating, “We believe we have a strong case, and we’re waiting for FIFA’s decision on our complaints.”
A favourable ruling could dramatically reshape Nigeria’s qualification prospects, potentially reinstating the Super Eagles into the intercontinental play-offs and reopening a pathway to the 2026 tournament.
However, DR Congo’s football authorities have rejected the allegations, maintaining that FIFA’s eligibility regulations permit the players to represent the country. They have accused Nigeria of attempting to overturn a result decided on the pitch.
