Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s son, Adamu Atiku, has declined to join Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri in defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
themomentng reports that Governor Fintiri had on Friday announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, alongside 22 of the 24 commissioners in his cabinet.
However, Adamu Atiku, who serves as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, and the Commissioner for Livestock, Maksha Atiku, were notably absent during the governor’s statewide broadcast at the Government House where the defection was formally declared.
According to The PUNCH, it sighted the handwritten list of commissioners who appended their signatures to confirm their defection to the APC.
Adamu Atiku and Maksha Atiku’s names were conspicuously missing from the document.
Their absence has fueled speculation about internal divisions within the Adamawa political structure, especially given the political stature of Atiku Abubakar.
A serving commissioner, who spoke on condition of anonymity, suggested that Adamu’s decision was influenced by loyalty to his father.
“If you recall, one of Atiku’s sons, Abba, joined the APC last month. So, Adamu cannot now also join the APC, abandoning their father in the African Democratic Congress,” the source said.
The commissioner added that such a move could raise concerns about the political standing of the former Vice President.
“It will raise questions about the political capacity of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. We sympathise with him over the political problem he is facing because of his father,” the source stated.
The commissioner further noted that Maksha Atiku is also regarded as a strong supporter of the former Vice President and may have chosen to remain loyal to his political leader.
