A meeting of the Council of State has been convened for 2 pm today, Monday, March 2, 2026, to ratify the appointment of the acting Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu.
Once the council approves Disu’s appointment as the substantive Inspector General of Police, he will go down in history as the first IGP to have been appointed and whose appointment was approved by the Council all within a week.
The Council of State meeting will be presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In Nigeria, the Council of State is a constitutional advisory body established under Section 153(1) of the 1999 Constitution to counsel the President on policy-making and key appointments including appointment of the Inspector General of Police.
Council of state members eligible to approve the appointment of the IGP, according to the Constitution, are: the President, who serves as the Chairman of the Council; the Vice-President, who acts as the Deputy Chairman; all former Presidents of the Federation and all former Heads of the Government of the Federation; all former Chief Justices of Nigeria; the President of the Senate; the Speaker of the House of Representatives; all the Governors of the states of the Federation; and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
These individuals are constitutionally recognised as eligible to participate in the advisory process concerning the appointment of the IGP.
Recall that Ag IGP Disu was named last week to replace Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down as IGP after a meeting with President Tinubu last Monday.
He reportedly took the decision after serving the nation in the force and attaining the position of IGP to enable him to prioritise attention to some family issues.
