The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Mr Musiliu Oseni, has urged reporters covering the power sector to use their access to information to enhance industry reporting.

Oseni, speaking during a courtesy visit by the Power Correspondents Association of Nigeria (PCAN) to the NERC headquarters in Abuja on Monday, said that power correspondents should utilise their access to information to enhance industry reporting.

He added that they should leverage this access to better educate the public.

While welcoming the collaboration offered by PCAN, he emphasised that informed media coverage was vital to securing public support for ongoing reforms within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

“Over the years, we have enjoyed a very smooth relationship with you, unlike when we first started.

“You have the responsibility to inform, not misinform, the public. We will continue to encourage you to carry out this duty diligently.

“If there is any misinformation out there, it spreads very fast and can lead to several unexpected consequences.

“But so far, we can confidently say that, following the improved relationship with you, we have seen a number of benefits,” he said.

In his remarks, PCAN Chairman Obas Esiedesa commended the commission for its improved digital transparency and proactive data sharing.

He also reaffirmed PCAN’s commitment to enhancing the depth and accuracy of reporting within the power sector.
