Supporters of former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, have stormed the premises of the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
themomentng reports that El-Rufai was arraigned on Tuesday by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), over alleged money laundering.
The arraignment follows mounting pressure from stakeholders, political elites and including chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the continued detention of El-Rufai.
In a video that emerged online, El-Rufai’s supporters were seen at the court premises chanting and displaying placards.
Meanwhile, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has described El-Rufai’s detention as political persecution.
Obi made the remark in Kaduna during a stakeholders’ meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The former Anambra State governor argued that the law requires that anyone accused of wrongdoing should be treated with dignity until proven guilty.
Obi said, “It is political persecution. We have a law, and that law allows for people to be treated with dignity until they are found guilty. Let our law prevail.
“How do you tell somebody you’re inviting him, and he came back voluntarily to the country, and you’re treating him like somebody who was running away.
“Let the law run its course. I have said it. I’ve written about it, and I continue to say so.”
