The Labour Party (LP) has postponed its ward, local government and state congresses, alongside its national convention, earlier scheduled to commence on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

The party said the decision was taken to allow wider participation in its ongoing membership re-registration exercise.

themomentng reports that the announcement was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the Senior Special Adviser to the Interim National Chairman on Media, Ken Eluma Asogwa.

The development represents a significant adjustment to the party’s earlier schedule.

Initially, ward congresses were fixed for March 26, to be followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, and a national convention slated for April 11, 2026.

However, the party said the revised plan became necessary after consultations with key stakeholders.

According to the statement, the postponement was agreed upon after a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee and representatives of labour unions.

“As part of efforts to ensure inclusiveness, the postponement was aimed at providing ample opportunity for members and prospective Nigerians to participate fully in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise,” Asogwa stated.

In a related development, the party announced the inauguration of a 45-member Congress and Convention Committee to oversee the rescheduled process.

The committee is chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, who represents Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Other members include Comrade Salisu N. Mohammed, Hon Obinna Aguocha, Hon Amaobi Ogah, Hon Ibe Okwara, Hon Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Hon Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Hon Benedict Etanabene, Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, Comrade Lawson Osagie, and Mrs Imaobong Ufot, among others.

While inaugurating the committee, the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, urged members to approach their assignment with diligence and neutrality.

“I urge you to take full advantage of the postponement to ensure that all necessary preparations are thoroughly completed, guaranteeing hitch-free congresses and conventions,” she said.

The party also appealed to its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and supporters nationwide for understanding, assuring that a new timetable would be announced in due course.

“She said the party remains committed to a transparent and credible process, adding that a fresh schedule would be communicated soon,” the statement added.
