The Governance Advisory Council, the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has endorsed the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

The development was disclosed on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on New Media, Jubril Gawat, via a post on 𝕏.

According to Gawat, the endorsement was made during a meeting of the council held at Lagos House, Marina.

“FLASH: The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) today unanimously endorsed and adopted the Deputy Governor of Lagos State Dr Obafemi Hamzat to be consensus candidate for the 2027 elections in Lagos State,” he wrote.

He added that the announcement was made by the leader of the GAC, Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi.

Gawat further revealed that members of the council went beyond endorsement by purchasing the nomination form for Hamzat.

“Alhaji Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi spoke on behalf of the GAC, today at the Lagos House Marina. The GAC members also announced that they paid for his nomination form,” the post stated.

The move signals a strong show of unity within the Lagos APC ahead of the 2027 elections.

The latest development comes barely 24 hours after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly endorsed Hamzat as his preferred successor.

Sanwo-Olu made the declaration following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where the deputy governor formally informed party leaders and members of the State Executive Council of his intention to contest.

Speaking after the meeting, the governor described Hamzat as competent and experienced.

“We just received Mr Deputy, who had come with a very powerful delegation of our leaders in the state to inform us of his intention to contest for the seat of the governorship position of the state.

“It was unanimous with all of us to say that Mr Deputy Governor is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He also praised Hamzat’s “integrity, loyalty, commitment and support,” noting that he possesses the qualities required to lead the state.
