The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has elected new officials for its North-West zone, with Hon. Salihu Suleiman from Kaduna State emerging as the National Vice Chairman of the party in the zone.
The election took place during the SDP North-West Zonal Congress held at the party’s state secretariat in Kaduna on Monday, May 4, 2026.
themomentng reports that the outcome of the congress was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman and Secretary of the Electoral Committee, Adamu Idris and Titus Madaki, at the end of the exercise.
According to the statement, all candidates who contested for the vacant zonal positions were returned unopposed.
The electoral committee said the congress was conducted peacefully and in line with the party’s internal democratic process.
Suleiman’s emergence as National Vice Chairman is expected to strengthen the party’s structure across the seven states in the North-West zone.
Addressing delegates after the election, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Adamu Idris, urged the newly elected officials to run an inclusive administration.
He advised them to carry all members along in decision-making and ensure that the interest of the party remained above personal ambition.
Idris also called for unity within the SDP, stressing that stronger internal cohesion would help the party remain competitive ahead of future elections.
He said the party must continue to build democratic structures that can attract members and improve its chances at the polls.
Speaking on behalf of the newly elected officials, Suleiman thanked delegates and party members for the confidence reposed in them.
He said the new leadership would work to strengthen the SDP across the North-West and make it a stronger opposition platform in the zone.
According to him, the focus of the new executives would be to improve the party’s electoral performance and expand its influence ahead of future contests.
Suleiman added that the party would intensify mobilisation, consultation and grassroots engagement across the zone.
Other officials elected at the congress include Rilwanu Jamo from Katsina State as Zonal Secretary; Hassan Gidan Laka from Sokoto State as Zonal Treasurer; Comrade Musa Lawan from Katsina State as Zonal Publicity Secretary; and Comrade Inuwa Idris from Kaduna State as Zonal Financial Secretary.
Also elected were Bishop Alex Baidi as Zonal Organising Secretary; Dr Aminu Sagagi as Welfare Secretary; Garba Namodori as Auditor; Ummi Kabir as Women Leader; and Murtala Jangebe as Youth Leader.
