Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Saturday backed the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.

themomentng reports that Kwankwaso said the decision reflected the party’s power-sharing arrangement and commitment to fairness.

He spoke at the NDC national convention in Abuja while addressing delegates, supporters and party stakeholders.

Kwankwaso said he supported the zoning of the presidential ticket to the South to allow the region complete its eight-year turn.

He said, “I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to Southern so that the region can complete its eight years.

“This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.”

The former Kano governor also urged Nigerians and party supporters to participate in the NDC’s mobilisation drive ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Please register now,” he appealed.

Kwankwaso’s endorsement came hours after the NDC formally adopted a resolution zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

The resolution was adopted during the party’s national convention after a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Afam Victor Ogene.

Announcing the decision, the National Chairman of the party, Moses Cleopas, said the arrangement was part of a broader power-sharing formula aimed at balancing regional interests within the opposition coalition.

Cleopas said the presidential ticket would return to the North in 2031 after the South completes its tenure.

“It will be the turn of the North in 2031,” he stated.

The party’s National Executive Committee also ratified the election of members of the National Working Committee during the convention.

The zoning arrangement is expected to boost the chances of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primary.
