Veteran journalist and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ayuba Umar, has withdrawn from the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship race.
themomentng reports that Umar announced his decision in a Facebook post on Tuesday, saying it followed wide consultations and deep personal reflection.
The former governorship aspirant said he stepped aside in the interest of fairness, equity and responsible leadership.
Explaining the reason for his withdrawal, Umar said it would be politically unfair and morally difficult for him to remain in the race because he comes from the same senatorial district, local government area and constituency as the incumbent governor, Abdullahi Sule.
He said leadership must be guided by justice and consistency, especially when one speaks in favour of balanced representation and zoning in the state.
“If I speak against political imbalance when others seek to benefit from it, then I must also reject it when I stand to gain. That is the true test of principled leadership and the responsibility that comes with integrity and accountability,” Umar stated.
Umar recalled that he had taken a similar decision in 2018 when he stepped aside in the interest of peace and political stability.
According to him, his latest withdrawal was another sacrifice aimed at protecting democratic values and strengthening public trust in political leadership.
“In 2018, I stepped aside for peace and stability. In 2026, I am stepping aside again to preserve the credibility of the principles that sustain democracy. This is not surrender; it is a reflection of conviction, character, and integrity,” he added.
Umar, had recently joined the ADC after resigning from the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), where he was previously a prominent member.
