Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State has released the identities of 36 students who are still in the custody of suspected Boko Haram insurgents following Monday’s deadly attack on the school.

The victims were among candidates sitting for the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination when gunmen stormed the school, killing a teacher and abducting dozens of students and staff.

According to school records, the 36 students still missing comprise 25 female candidates and 11 male candidates.

The release of their identities has provided a clearer picture of the scale of the abduction, as families continue to wait anxiously for news of their loved ones while security agencies intensify rescue efforts.

Initial reports indicated that 43 people were abducted during the attack, including 41 students and two teachers. However, seven victims have since been rescued by security operatives.

Those freed include five female students and the two teachers who were taken during the raid.

One of the rescued teachers confirmed that many of the students remain in captivity despite ongoing rescue operations.

Shortly after the attack, troops of Operation HADIN KAI, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, launched a pursuit operation against the fleeing insurgents.

Security sources said the troops tracked the attackers into nearby bushes, where they engaged them in a gun battle. Motorcycles believed to have been used by the insurgents were also recovered during the operation.

The attack occurred while students were writing their NECO examinations.

Reports indicate that the insurgents entered Lassa community on motorcycles, disguising themselves as soldiers and members of the newly introduced Forest Guards before launching the assault.

The attackers reportedly took advantage of the community’s market day to carry out the operation.

Witnesses said the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic across the area before forcing students into nearby forest areas. A teacher was killed during the attack.

The Borno State Government has confirmed that the abducted students are between the ages of 15 and 18.

Authorities said joint rescue efforts involving the military, police, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local vigilante groups are continuing in a bid to secure the safe release of the remaining victims.
