A 32-year-old Nigerian, Osarenkhoe Atutie, has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for the attempted murder of a woman in Leith, Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
According to a report published on the website of Police Scotland on Wednesday and seen by PUNCH Metro on Thursday, Atutie had earlier pleaded guilty to the violent offence.
The report stated that he was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday.
Police Scotland disclosed that the incident occurred on the morning of November 11, 2025, in the Duke Street area of Leith, where Atutie allegedly approached the 30-year-old woman, who was known to him, and repeatedly stabbed her in the head and body with a knife.
The report added that before emergency services arrived, members of the public came to the victim’s aid, apprehended Atutie nearby and restrained him until police officers arrived and arrested him.
The woman was taken to hospital, where she was treated and later discharged.
Commenting on the case, Detective Sergeant Craig McMillan described the attack as “particularly harrowing.”
“My thoughts are with the victim and her family,” he said.
He also commended members of the public who intervened during the attack, saying their actions likely saved the woman’s life.
“I’d like to thank those members of the public who came to the victim’s aid during the ordeal. Without their intervention and assistance, there is a high chance that the victim would not have survived the attack,” McMillan said.
The detective added that tackling violence against women and girls remained one of Police Scotland’s highest priorities.
“Violence in any form and the possession of weapons in any environment has no place in Scotland and is entirely unacceptable. Tackling the harmful effects of violent crime, which has a devastating impact on individuals, families and our communities, and supporting victims remains a priority for our officers,” he said.
Reporting the judgment on Wednesday, the UK’s Daily Star stated that Atutie repeatedly stabbed his partner in front of their daughter, leaving her with at least 12 separate injuries.
Meanwhile, the latest conviction comes months after PUNCH Metro reported on February 6, 2026, that a UK court sentenced 40-year-old Nigerian, Adedapo Adegbola, to life imprisonment for murdering his 23-year-old former girlfriend, Steph Irons, in Nottingham, England.
Adegbola admitted stabbing Irons to death at her home in October 2025 following the breakdown of their relationship.
