A Nigerian NHS worker in Manchester, United Kingdom, Innocent Ayodele, is facing a possible driving ban after he was caught driving against the flow of traffic on a motorway slip road while attempting to avoid a traffic jam.
Ayodele was stopped after driving the wrong way along an entry slip road to the M61. He reportedly told police that he was trying to get home to his pregnant wife after finishing work.
However, the police officer who confronted him described the manoeuvre as dangerous, warning that Ayodele could have collided with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
The case was brought before Preston Magistrates’ Court, where Ayodele apologised for his actions. He already has nine penalty points on his driving licence and could be disqualified from driving when he returns to court for sentencing.
The incident comes amid concerns over the dangers of wrong-way driving on motorways. Motoring safety experts have warned that driving against traffic on a motorway can result in potentially fatal head-on collisions due to the high speeds involved.
