The MTN Foundation on Friday said it received 20,983 nominations from Nigerians seeking upgrades for public healthcare centres and secondary school science laboratories nationwide.
The nominations were received under the sixth phase of its What Can We Do Together (WCWDT) initiative, following a call for nominations in May.
This is disclosed in a statement on Friday by Mrs Odunayo Sanya, the Executive Director, MTN Foundation.
She said the initiative was designed to strengthen communities by improving access to essential healthcare services and practical science learning.
Sanya said the intervention would also provide future scientists, engineers and doctors with better facilities to develop their skills through practical learning.
She said the nomination deadline was extended to June 22 to enable more communities to participate in identifying facilities requiring intervention.
Sanya said nomination and physical verification had now been completed, paving the way for selection of facilities to benefit from the programme.
According to her, 149 facilities were physically assessed nationwide, comprising 113 public primary healthcare centres and 36 public secondary schools.
She said the verification exercise involved on-site assessments to confirm government ownership, accessibility, existing infrastructure, and the general condition of the facilities.
“The exercise also assessed the suitability of the facilities for revitalisation or upgrading under the initiative,” she said.
The executive director said 40 public primary healthcare centres would be revitalised, while 15 public secondary school science laboratories would be renovated and equipped under Phase Six.
She said the community-driven approach remained central to WCWDT, enabling Nigerians to identify projects they considered most important to their communities.
Sanya urged Nigerians who submitted nominations to follow its official channels for updates as the selection process progresses and successful recipient communities are announced.
