The Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Austin Eguavoen has been picked as the interim coach of the senior women’s team of Nigeria, the Super Falcons on an interim basis for their 2028 Olympic Games qualify fixtures against Comoros in October, as the search for a substantive head coach for the team continues.
‘Cerezo’ brings a wealth of experience to the assignment, having managed at the highest international level, including leading Nigeria’s Super Eagles to bronze medal finish at the 2006 African Cup of Nation (AFCON) in Egypt.
The 10th-time African champions – Super Falcons has been left without a coach following the decision of the former board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to fire head coach Justin Maidugu, following his failure to qualify for the world cup for the first time in the history of the tournament.
Ahead of the upcoming Olympic Qualifiers, Eguaveon will be in charge and will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma who managed the Nigeria U20 team across multiple stints, including the 2022 and 2024 World Cup cycles.
The former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa will serve as goalkeeper trainer. Baruwa has worked with several of Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles, CHAN Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets.
Former Super Falcons defender and now coach Ayosat Yusuf will also serve as one of the assistant coaches. Yusuf earned 68 international caps for Nigeria and represented the country at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nation tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
